Honorable Mention Stereotypic Vision Bhavna Kapoor Is it true, she asked, That you Wash your clothes in rivers Sleep on nails Climb up ropes Levitate In yogic contortions Eat Chikken Tikka Everyday Burn your widows Alive Worship cows I could have said No We have washing machines And beds And I have never seen The Indian rope trick I don't do yoga I am a vegetarian And we no longer Burn our women Unless we are Rioting over religion In which case, We burn everything Except cows I could have said All that and more But I didn't bother Because She probably wouldn't Believe me If I told her that We have electricity And running water Internet (no kidding !) That we know Who Jerry Seinfeld is And we don't like Peanut Butter But we have McDonalds That serves everything But beef Yes, I said We wash our clothes in rivers But I prefer the lakes. (Inspiration for the poem : On my first day in the US, a young lady at the airport asked me if we had washing machines back in India. I am often amused (and I mean no offence here) by the West's supposed fascination with and yet ridiculously myopic perception of the East.)
